Clear aligner therapy involves wearing custom-made removable teeth aligners to straighten your teeth. At Bo Macdonald DDS Dentistry, we use these virtually invisible appliances typically made from BPA-free clear plastic to move your teeth into their correct positions without the need for metal brackets or wires.
Because they are removable, you can take out your clear aligners to brush and floss your teeth normally as well as for special occasions like weddings, holiday parties, class reunions, or other social gatherings. Unlike traditional braces, you don’t have to avoid certain foods during your treatment since you can easily take the aligners out before eating. You also won’t have to worry about having food stuck in your braces.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Clear aligners are transparent removable trays that gradually shift your teeth into place over time. The trays are made from smooth and comfortable plastic material and are designed to snugly fit over your teeth. Each tray is custom-made for you, created to straighten your smile throughout your treatment progressively.
After taking impressions of your teeth, we’ll send your digital impressions to our lab, where the technicians will use them to create your clear aligners. Once your aligners are ready, you’ll return to our office to get fitted for them.
During your treatment, you’ll wear each set of aligners for two weeks. After that, you’ll switch them out for a new set and continue straightening your smile. The best part about clear aligner therapy is that you can remove the aligners to brush and floss your teeth as you normally would for fresh breath and clean teeth!
The Benefits of Clear Aligners
Easy to Maintain and Clean
With clear aligners, you won’t need to worry about metal parts or wires that can trap food and plaque, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Since the aligners are removable, you can brush and floss your teeth normally to maintain good oral hygiene. This can also help reduce the risk of staining that is associated with fixed braces.
Comfortable to Wear
The smooth plastic surface of the aligners will not irritate the soft tissues of your mouth. There are no sharp brackets to poke at your gums or the inside of your lips.
You can remove your aligners to eat your favorite foods and maintain oral hygiene. You can also remove them for occasions like important meetings or class photos. Unlike traditional braces, you do not need frequent dental trips to the dentist to tighten the wires.
No one will know you are wearing your aligners unless you tell them. This means less time spent explaining your smile to others. Without the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces, most people won’t even notice you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
